I’ve noticed when talking about “self-care” people’s eyes glaze over. It’s like when my parents told me as a teenager to make sure I did my homework before going out with my friends. (cue eye roll) I was not going to do that.
Do you know why I should have made it a priority to get my homework done? I would have had more options for college and better habits so I didn’t fail out of my first semester at Junior college, then I would not have been on academic probation when I transferred to a University. My parents were giving me advice on how to make sure I had a more successful future without as much struggle.
Oftentimes we don’t take care of ourselves the way we need to because we are too focused on how we are feeling in the moment and what will give us energy/comfort/happiness right now. Doing your homework (making sure you have healthy food on hand, drinking water, exercise and mindfulness practice) are not immediately fun, sometimes it is flat out boring. However, what is your alternative? When you don’t take care of yourself ahead of time, you’re putting yourself at risk of ending up stressed, anxious and emotionally eating to cope with your negative feelings. Or is that just me?
I have been feeling pretty horrible lately, I have had this sadness in the pit of my stomach that I have had such a challenging time shaking. It’s like this big blue blob of muck that is weighing me down. Yesterday, while on the verge of tears, I took a few minutes to talk with myself over why I was feeling this way. After taking time to meditate and quiet the chatter in my head, I realized I was not taking care of myself like I needed to. I was making excuses to eat more sugar than I know is good for me, I was letting being tired stop me from working out and I was not getting outside like I need to.
When you let your self care go and you let the excuses take over your day-it will absolutely affect how you show up in the world and how you feel about yourself.
You are a human, you work hard and you have an inherent right to take care of yourself and provide yourself with quality food, sleep and exercise.
